"I am proud to say that I have been providing care for cancer patients for over 20 years—most of which has been in this region," says Allen Lim, MD, SCH Medical Oncologist. "Many patients still believe cancer treatments will only make them sicker; however, many things have changed the course of cancer care over the years. The treatments are now easier on the patient and much more successful as they are more advanced. Even though the number of cancer patients continues to grow, the survival rate has increased significantly. Thanks to new advanced technology, patients are now living much longer."
St. Claire's cancer care program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons through its adherence to the Commission on Cancer's Program Standards. St. Claire's Cancer Program received seven special awards of commendation this year by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
Markey Cancer Center Affiliation
The unique affiliate partnership between St. Claire HealthCare and the UK Markey Cancer Center provides our region with some of today's most advanced radiation and chemotherapies. Located on the campus of SCH, the Cancer Treatment Center is a modern cancer treatment facility offering advanced radiation medicine—close to home.
This partnership allows for University of Kentucky (UK) physicians to provide on-site advanced cancer treatments in Morehead and provides over $4 million in new radiation medicine equipment. Some of the new radiation equipment includes:
- Linear Accelerator with Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) capability. This is an external beam radiotherapy, which delivers more precisely targeted radiation beams to tumors, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue—a painless procedure.
- Siemens Sensation Open CT Simulator—a comprehensive oncology solution for advanced virtual CT simulation. This enables visualization of the complete anatomy for more accurate oncology treatment planning, which optimizes the clinical process of image-guided radiation therapy planning.
