St. Claire Health Care and the Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day 2023

St. Claire Health Care and the Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day 2023

On Sunday, June 4, UK St. Claire (SCH) and the Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day with an ice cream social!

Survivors, along with their friends and families, gathered together to enjoy a variety of sweet treats, fun activities, and live music. Each survivor in attendance received a free Survivors’ Day t-shirt and was entered to win a variety of door prizes.

“We come together to celebrate those who have survived, inspire those who have recently been diagnosed, gather for support, and be an outreach for the community,” said Brittany Blair, APRN, Oncology Clinic Manager. “We are all in this together because we are one big family.”

During this year’s ice cream social, the SCH Comprehensive Cancer Center recognized Allen Lim, MD, Oncologist/Hematologist for his more than 30 years of service to UK St. Claire in offering cancer care to the people of Eastern Kentucky. Dr. Lim recently announced his upcoming retirement. His last day seeing patients will be June 28, 2023.

“When I came here in 1989, there were only two beds to treat oncology patients and now we have 14 beds and a whole unit dedicated to oncology and infusions,” said Dr. Lim. “Although I am retiring, I want to ensure everyone knows the team will be here to serve each patient who needs care for their cancer diagnosis.”

For many years, the first Sunday of June has been observed as National Cancer Survivors Day. Whether you are a cancer survivor, a family member, a friend, or a medical professional, this day provides a time to connect with others, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have been constant support along the way.
