Global Shortage of Iodinated Contrast Agent Affects St. Claire HealthCare

St. Claire HealthCare, along with other healthcare systems and imaging sites across the globe, are experiencing a shortage of iodinated contrast agents (Omnipaque, Visipaque, Isovue, Optiray). These agents are used for CT exams for general radiology and cardiac diagnostics. Iodinated contrast helps radiologists to better see and understand the CT scan images taken of the body.

“The Diagnostic Imaging team is taking the appropriate steps to conserve the supply of iodinated contrast that is currently available at St. Claire,” said Theresa Hollan, RT, RDMS, RVT, SCH Director of Diagnostic Imaging. “We’re hopeful that this issue will be short-term and will affect as few of our patients as possible."

This shortage is a global issue, therefore other healthcare systems and imaging sites are having similar experiences. St. Claire HealthCare will continue to monitor the shortage and search for additional supply of the iodinated contrast agents.
