Amy Tefft, MD, Joins St. Claire HealthCare’s General Surgery Team

St. Claire HealthCare (SCH) is proud to welcome Amy Tefft, MD, to its general surgery practice.

“Working in general surgery in a rural community has been a career goal for me, so I’m very excited to be joining the team at St. Claire,” said Tefft.

Tefft completed her undergraduate degree at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, California, then earned a medical degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. She did a general surgery residency through the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (UKCOM) where she had the opportunity to practice at SCH during rotations.

“From the first time I practiced as a resident at St. Claire, I would often say ‘wherever I end up, I would love to find a job exactly like this one.’ When I happened to be looking for a job, I saw there was an opportunity here. I felt like it was meant to be,” said Tefft. “St. Claire is a diamond in Eastern, Kentucky. It’s filled with some great physicians, nurses, and staff and is surrounded by a great community.”

While Tefft wants to establish her general surgery practice, she has her sights set on a passion for treating breast cancer patients.

“Breast cancer has affected my family since I can remember. My experience has led me to strive to be an advocate for prevention and screening and really establish that in the community to prevent some of the later stage breast cancer cases we tend to see in Kentucky in general,” said Tefft.

Tefft is looking forward to providing quality care to her patients during what can be one of the biggest moments of their lives.

“Having surgery can be a major moment for a patient. As a surgeon, I enjoy building a special bond with each and every patient so they know that I’m here and I want to help them throughout their journey to recovery,” said Tefft.
