St. Claire Foundation Announces 2022 Bertha Ross Hough Endowment Fund Recipients

Nurses and aides can make a big difference in the lives of their patients. This was especially true for the late Bertha Ross Hough who passed in January 2013. In honor of Mrs. Hough and the healthcare providers that cared for her, the Bertha Ross Hough Endowment Fund was established through the St. Claire Foundation.

“This fund provides financial assistance for those who want to pursue a career in the medical field,” said Mindy Highley, St. Claire HealthCare (SCH) Executive Director, Community Engagement & Philanthropy. “Being awarded could mean that a student can focus more on their career and coursework and less on financial burdens that going to school can create, such as travel expenses and textbooks.”

This year, five SCH staff members were recipients of the endowment, including Josh Carroll, Kyle Evans, Natasha Haney, Makenzie Moore, and Katherine Wang.

Josh Carroll, is a Nurse Extern and works as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) on 3 Center at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. He is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing at Ohio University Southern in Ironton, OH, and is on track to complete his degree in 2023.

Kyle Evans works as a Clinical Paramedic in the Emergency Department at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. He carries 16 years of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) experience and is working toward earning an Associate Degree in Nursing at Morehead State University. Evans’ long-term goal is to continue his education and become a Nurse Practitioner.

Natasha Haney is a PCA on 3 Center at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. She has wanted to be a nurse since she was a child and works toward this dream every day with the hands-on experience she gains at St. Claire. Haney is working to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing at Galen College of Nursing.

Makenzie Moore works as a Nurse Extern on 3 Center at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. She is working to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing at Morehead State University while also taking additional classes toward earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Katherine Wang is a Health Unit Coordinator at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. She is working to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing at Morehead State University. Wang decided to pursue a career in nursing after receiving excellent care from the nursing team at SCH during the delivery of her son.

“These individuals are very deserving of this scholarship and have truly shown their appreciation,” said Highley. “We are happy to offer such opportunities.”
