Hemorrhoids and You: Living Comfortably with an Uncomfortable Issue

J. Michael Burton, MDDid you know that about 10 million Americans suffer from hemorrhoids annually?

“Hemorrhoids are very common among many adults,” says J. Michael Burton, M.D., St. Claire general surgeon. “Most hemorrhoids happen because of changes our bodies go through as we get older and the fact that we don’t change our lifestyles accordingly. They are also quite common in those who are overweight or pregnant.”

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are caused from increased pressure on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area. External hemorrhoids more commonly cause symptoms of pain and itching when irritated. Internal hemorrhoids are generally painless, but can cause bleeding.

“They can cause bright red rectal bleeding, but if you have bleeding, don’t assume its hemorrhoids,” Burton says. “Colorectal cancer can also cause rectal bleeding. If you experience rectal bleeding, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to rule out can

cer or other serious causes of rectal bleeding.” Diagnoses and treatment of hemorrhoids differs for each person. Most diagnosis is done with a simple physical exam. Treatment seldom requires surgery, and in most cases, can be done at home. For some patients, however, surgery is required to aid in the healing process.

Prevent Flare-Ups

Healthy habits can help improve or prevent you from getting hemorrhoids. “Eating high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables can allow bowel movements to be much more comfortable. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining an active lifestyle also helps prevent flare-ups,” Burton says.
