Dyslexia Testing & Therapy

Developmental dyslexia is the most common learning disability, affecting 5 to 10 percent of the population. In order to assess for dyslexia, a full case history will be obtained and a series of assessments will be administered. These assessments evaluates reading skills (out loud and to self), reading comprehension (when read to and when reading to self), language skills, spelling skills, sight word reading efficiency, and phonological awareness (ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in words). A sample of your child’s school work and report cards is also recommended. The testing is administered over 4 to 6 one hour sessions (number of sessions will vary from child to child). Once everything has been completed, results are discussed in a parent follow-up session.

Clinical treatment goals target phonological sensitivity intervention (recognizing and manipulating sounds in words) and sound-symbol correspondence (relationship between letters and sounds in words) in order to provide the fundamentals required for strong reading and spelling skills. A home exercise program will be provided and participation is strongly encouraged as it is critical to establishing new skills.
