St. Claire Regional Medical Center has set a record goal of $250,000 for its 2012 Annual Fundraising Campaign.

The theme for this year's campaign is "31 Medical Specialties. One Priority. You".

"I think it's amazing that a hospital in a city the size of Morehead – particularly a faith-based, not-for-profit, stand-alone hospital – can provide more than 30 medical specialties and has a half-million patient encounters a year," said Tom Lewis, St. Claire Foundation Executive Director. "Just think about the void that would exist in this region if St. Claire Regional were not here."

Lewis said SCR is always striving to find new and better ways to meet the area's healthcare needs.

For instance, SCR recently opened a new Women's Imaging Center with digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and bone density testing. The center offers these highly specialized services in a tranquil, comfortable setting, Lewis said.

"We understand the convenience and comfort of having the expert care you need right here at home," he said. "Our efforts to offer these types of much needed, specialized services are made possible in part by gifts to the St. Claire Foundation during our annual fundraising campaigns."

Another significant issue facing not-for-profit hospitals like SCR is the growing number of uninsured and underinsured patients whom they treat. Last year, SCR provided $11.3 million in charity and uncompensated care, at cost.

"Everyone deserves excellent medical care," Lewis said. "Gifts to the St. Claire Foundation help us offset those losses as we continue to provide needed care to those who come through our doors, regardless of their ability to pay."
