St. Claire Regional Diabetes Education Program Celebrates ADA Recognition with an Open House

Community news | Thursday, October 13, 2011

The St. Claire Regional (SCR) Diabetes Education program has been awarded its fifth consecutive recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). To celebrate this honor, SCR is hosting an open house on Wednesday, October 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the SCR Diabetes Education department, located on the second floor of the hospital. Everyone is invited to join the diabetes team to celebrate this achievement and enjoy free refreshments.

The SCR Diabetes Education program provides comprehensive diabetes self-management education for individuals with diabetes or those who are at risk for developing diabetes. Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the program. Through the support of our health care team and increased diabetes knowledge and awareness, the patients can assume a major part of the responsibility for their diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

The ADA Education Recognition effort, begun in the fall of 1986, is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have staff with knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants.

"The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services they provide", commented Sherry Adkins, RN, Diabetes Education Coordinator. "And, of course, it helps consumers to identify these quality programs."

The SCR Diabetes Education program provides services at the hospital and at SCR Family Medicine locations. For more information on the SCR Diabetes Education program, please contact (606) 783-6702.
