The Purell Portal Program makes it easier and faster for staff to comply with hand hygiene guidelines by placing dispensers of alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the doorway of every patient room and at other critical areas throughout the Medical Center. These sanitizers kill 99.99% of most common germs that may cause disease and illness, including MRSA and VRE. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers require only ¼ of the time needed for soap and water hand washing. And no sink, water, or towels are required, providing a convenient way to disinfect the care provider’s hands without adding extra time or steps to his/her daily routine. Also families and other patient visitors are encouraged to use the convenient units, as infections can be spread by anyone who touches a patient. The program helps demonstrate St. Claire’s commitment to quality patient care. By using sanitizer when hands are not visibly soiled, staff takes an active role in helping prevent the spread of germs, protecting employees and patients. Soon new sanitizer dispensers will be installed throughout St. Claire.
